Wiener Sommerdeutschkurse (Englisch)

As of 2026, new regulations apply to non-regular pupils (außerordentliche Schüler*innen): To ensure they progress successfully through the school system and receive equal educational opportunities, attending the federal summer school (Bundessommerschule) during the summer break is now mandatory. With the Vienna Summer German Courses, your child gains a crucial head start even before their very first day of school.

The Vienna Summer German Courses are a free program provided by the City of Vienna, exclusively designed for primary school starters. This includes all children starting compulsory education in September 2026 who will attend an elementary school in Vienna.

Each course runs for two weeks and takes place in small groups of up to 12 children at various schools across Vienna’s districts. These courses help children improve their German language skills. Guided by experienced language teachers, they practice German through exercises and everyday play. This effective approach helps children better understand and speak German, ensuring they have an easier start to school.

To register, the following three requirements must be met:

• The child must be registered as a resident in Vienna.
• The child currently attends kindergarten and is subject to compulsory schooling starting September 2026 (born between September 2, 2019, and September 1, 2020).
• The child will start elementary school in autumn 2026 as a non-regular student.
